All right, let's get started. I've been putting off this blog for a couple of months because I never feel like I have the perfect thing to write about.
I'm working on a few different projects but can't seem to finish any of them. My new project at work is different than before, taking more of my time, and I'm feeling lost across the board. I'm learning, probably making progress, but I don't feel like I'm getting anywhere clear or that I have a real path forward.
So here we are. I'll just talk about what I've been working on, and maybe one of them becomes the topic for the next post.
The main thing: I'm building my first software-as-a-service application. I've never really built something from scratch — at least not at work, where the infrastructure was always handed to me. I want to do something from beginning to end. Become a real full-stack engineer. I have something like five to ten years of experience as a developer and I still feel like I could do more.
I decided to help my wife with a small app for her daycare. She was spending a lot of time writing daily reports for parents, so I built something where she can dictate what happened with the kids during the day, hit send, and the reports go out by email. She uses it every day and says it saves her a lot of time.
Now I'm trying to turn that into something anyone can use for a small fee. I don't expect it to make a lot of money. I just want to have a real project out there.
